The first european standard on the accuracy of precipitation measurements instruments has been published as EN 17277:2019 "Hydrometry. Measurement requirements and classification of rainfall intensity measuring instruments"

kick-off meeting of the new EURAMET/EMPIR project INCIPIT "calibration and accuracy of non-catching instruments to measure liquid/solid atmospheric precipitation" hosted by the Lead Centre in Vigna di Valle.

The Lead Centre partecipated to the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2017 in Amsterdam

The Lead Centre partecipated to the Metoemet final meeting in Moncalieri (Tourin), presentig the results performed in the Research Excellence Grant (REG3) of the Meteomet2 project.

The Lead Centre partecipated to the EGU 2017 conference with poster presentations on wind tunnel experiments and precipitation measurements issues.

The Lead Centre will participate to the WMO TECO 2016 conference and the International Conference on Metrology for Meteorology and Climate with poster presentations on the more recent research developments and ongoing collaborations.

Wind tunnel experiments are currently under execution at the DICCA laboratories to provide information on rain gauges performance under turbulent winds and validation of CFD numerical analysis.

The Lead Centre has recently signed a new research agreement with LSI LASTEM to study an improved rainfall intensity sensor compliant with UNI 11452:2012.

Terms of Reference of the LC-PrIn “B. Castelli”

  1. The CIMO LC-PrIn maintains
    • capability to perform dynamic calibration, metrological confirmation and intercomparison of rain intensity gauges in the laboratory
    • suitable equipment for
      - laboratory calibration
      - the traceability of its measurement standards and
      - measuring instruments,
      therefore providing support for certification of the instruments’ performance as a suitable Independent Third Party Organisation.
    • a set of gauges acting as a working reference for field measurements of rainfall/snow intensity.
  2. The CIMO LC-PrIn conducts research on
    • suitable equipment and procedures for routine field testing of network precipitation gauges which would be recommended for the standardization of field calibrations of precipitation gauges during operational use,
    • suitable devices and technical procedures to improve the testing capabilities following the results of the WMO Field Intercomparison of RI gauges
    • the interpretation of the influence of measurement errors on meteo-hydrological applications
    • correction procedure for historic data series
    • post-processing techniques for automatic correction of the measured rain intensity.
  3. The CIMO LC-PrIn has the necessary testbed and equipped facility to perform regular field measurement campaigns or international/regional comparisons with the purpose to test
    • the performance of different measuring principles for rainfall intensity (RI) and
    • the effects of laboratory calibrations mentioned above on the measured intensities.
  4. The CIMO LC-PrIn collaborates and cooperate with
    • relevant CIMO Expert Teams in developing guidance material
    • WMO regional instrument centres (RICs) and other international testbeds for the organization and participation in field tests for specific purposes or in international/regional intercomparisons;
  5. The CIMO LC-PrIn proposes:
    • standards on precipitation intensity measurements for consideration in WMO and ISO technical committees
    • reports on all significant tests to the CIMO community, through publication of IOM reports and publications in scientific journals
    • technical support and vocational training and periodic training courses on general and specific issues related to liquid/solid rainfall intensity measurements.
